Forcing Bulbs

'This trick is general practice with the Dutch, but in Germany only recently become known'  'Der neu-angekommene Holländische Gärtner' p15, (published in 1731). So begins the first known account of forcing bulbs.
How many of you have forced bulbs to ensure some blooms during the gloomiest days of winter?

The beginning of October is the right time to start. For those of you who would like a "how to" reminder, the following sites have some good information.

Tip: About six tulip bulbs, three hyacinths, six daffodils or 15 crocus will fit into a 6-inch pot.

  1. One time I received a gift of forced daffodils as a winter present. It was so wonderful to have a spot of colour in the house. Thanks for the tips to do it on our own. - Margy
