Mason Bee Hotels

Our first official meeting via Zoom was held last Tuesday. Thanks to skilled technical management a social time was accomplished after the presentation. Just like in real life some good topics came up, one of which was mason bee hotels. A number of people wanted to know more.  Margy offered to share the story of building her bee hotel. You will find this, and some of my experiences in housing our little friends, in today's post.

Following is a tour of Gwen's garden. I was very impressed with the planning which went in to managing the event. Many thanks to all involved for achieving a return to one of our most treasured activities.

Tips for Wet Weather Gardening

Is anyone enjoying our wet cool weather besides the slugs? At least my salad greens are thriving even if the menu calls for hot soup.

The Blog Gal's Garden

When Sherry agreed to test run the virtual garden tour project she said it would be a good idea for the social media gals to step up. It was a good idea because now I know the anxiety I must cause people when I pounce on them at meetings. Before you go further, two things I should tell you, I grow, mostly, vegetables (try getting a wow shot of those!) and I wandered down memory lane.

Lesley Moseley's Blue Poppy

Meconopsis Blues

The first time I’d ever seen, or even heard of Himalayan Blue Poppy was a number of years ago when I attended a flower photography workshop at the UBC botanical gardens. The instructor told us one was in bloom and we really needed to see it.

Keeping a Garden Journal

I like the idea of keeping a garden journal but my attempts so far are disappointing and unsatisfying. Having received a journal I feel it is time to give it another go. Here are some tips for those of you, like me, who plan to do better.

The Program Committee Reveal

Program Committee Update

Even though we are not having our regular monthly meetings, we can continue learning about what works and doesn’t work in our gardens and learn more about each other.

We thought a series of articles or ‘blurbs’ on the Powell River Garden Club Blog about what got us interested in gardening, what inspires us and what lights our gardening fire.

We are debuting two pieces today, Stay tuned for more in the weeks to come.

Keep Calm and Garden On

Hello Fellow Gardeners. Your media folks are working on making our sites: newsletter, blog and face book, a place where we can all connect while we adopt the "stay at home" plan.  The programme committee will be bringing you something very soon, meanwhile, today, I'm introducing the "garden reports" project. Several members have agreed to report on what is happening in their gardens, greenhouses, potting sheds and windowsills. Think of these posts as something like our social chat at garden club and feel free to chip in with your own reports, pictures, suggestions, questions and funny anecdotes. Many thanks to Diana Watson, who kick started the project, her first report follows.

February is a Great Month for Garden Planning

From the pen of Master Gardener Sharon.

The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” Robbie Burns

With seed catalogue(s) in one hand and my seed stash spread out on the dining room table, I’m ready for another garden planning session. Time to decide what I have, what I need to pick up at Seedy Saturday (March 14, 2020) and what I need to order or pick up at the nurseries. As I review my garden successes and failures over the last year, I’m amazed at the events that impacted my garden in the past few years. I realize that I can plan and plan but I am at the mercy of so many factors outside of my control.
