Sherry's Garden Part 2

More of Sherry Hawkins garden

Vegetables

I set up a grow table on my front deck to start my seeds.  It is a collapsible wood frame, which I cover with plastic and a blanket at night when it's cold.  Inside there is a heating mat (currently unplugged), and 2 grow lights which you can see sitting on the deck right now (also currently unplugged).
Cucumber and tomato seedlings waiting to move into their new garden beds.

I have a great crop of garlic this year, about 76 heads

I left one of last year's kale plants in place to feed the pollinators

Sunflowers, cucs, squash, beans and peas also waiting for their new homes.  I am expanding my garden this year, and the new beds aren't ready yet!  I normally direct sow my peas and beans, but these seeds were ones I saved from my plants a couple years ago, and I wanted to make sure they were viable.

You see a row of purple topped turnips & celery here. The first patch of dirt is where I planted carrots, the second patch is parsnips.  However, this is the second time I have planted these crops, and it still doesn't look like anything came up, except a few volunteer weeds
Three days ago we added the two new cattle panels to our garden.  They will form a beautiful covered garden path, and are planted with squash (butternut, spaghetti & acorn) and long English cucumbers.  I have successfully grown both squash & cucumbers on the wooden pyramid structure you can see on the right back side of the garden in years past, but this is my first time growing them on a cattle panel trellis.  I am very excited to see how they turn out!

My tomatoes are planted to the left of the photo in a 4x16 foot bed with a poly covered roof to keep the rain off them and help prevent blight.  A special note of interest is that this year I successfully grew tomato plants from seeds that were 7 years old.  Some of you may remember another guest speaker we had in about 2013-14 (?), Carolyn Herriot from 'The Garden Path' and 'Seeds of Victoria', whose red cherry tomatoes are very delicious and prolific, and obviously produce seeds with great longevity 🙂🍅.  Many thanks to those who have organized our guest speakers in the past and those who have been doing it this year!

This door leads into our Raspberry patch.  It was just the right size for our grand kids when they were toddlers

Our bird bath among the ferns

Fire pit & hammock in the back yard.  We like to rest or take a nap here, but our grand kids like to use it as a giant swing and see if they can send their sibling flying through the air with it...

The Creek

The bridge

The other side of the creek.  You can see the big beautiful tropical-like leaves of skunk cabbage in the bottom left corner of the photo, a favorite of the bears when they awake from hibernation.  It is beautiful down here, several varieties of ferns, and a mossy trail winds through the mature blueberry bushes

This creek side fire pit is a quiet place to sit, relax and enjoy the gentle sound of the water flowing by.   Notice the old cedar stump at the back right of the photo, the spring board notches made by loggers many years ago are still evident

. My favorite place to sit and rock beside our front door.  Come and join me!
Huge thanks to Sherry for being the first one to do a virtual garden visit. Now the kinks have been ironed out please think about letting us tour your garden virtually. Email  powellrivergardenclub@gmail.com  for the details.
