At our meeting this week, Shirley spoke about Fraser’s Thimble Farm on Salt Spring Island and the challenges they face due to water restrictions imposed there.
Fraser’s Thimble Farm is a mail order and retail nursery
specializing in rare, unusual and native plants. An article in a local newspaper shows what they
have done to conserve water over the years and the problems with permitting by
the North Salt Spring Waterworks District. They have started a petition.
They would like to raise funds for long-term water storage
to ensure their nursery stays in business in the future with water shortages on
Salt Spring being what they are so there is a GoFundMe Campaign for Thimble Farm Rainwater
Storage.
This isn’t the first time the problems of Salt Spring’s
water shortages have been reported. Harry Burton of AppleLuscious Organic Orchards was featured in an article on CBC.ca in 2015.
